As some of you know I’m very into website design and graphic design and although I’ve been doing both for sometime now there is one thing that has never changed as far as web design in concerned, BROWSING. For anyone out there that does web design you probably know my complaints before I even start here but I thought I would post a blog to let some others in on what we as designer’s know and maybe lay some insight on what should be industry standard.
Now what most of you don’t know out there is that when you design a website, (and by this i mean a custom website not the insert your image into a template type) you actually have to look at your website in up to 4 other browsers (i.e. Safari, Internet Explorer, Chrome) just to make sure that it looks the same in each one. You see the problem is, there are so many different browsers out there and all of them react differently to website code. This is quite a pain in the ass trust me. For example, I’ll create a box on my website that has rounded corners and will be 1 inch down from the top of the screen. Now this looks great in FireFox but when i view it in IE (internet explorer) the rounded corners are gone and the box is only a half an inch from the top instead of a full inch. This is definitely every designers biggest gripe out there because now i have to go back in and figure out how to make it look the same in both browsers. The problem here is when you change something for one browser it screws up something else in another browser, thus i have to write twice as much code just to make this work properly across the board. The solution to this would be if every computer company would just agree on 1 browser, then we could all view websites how they should be viewed and thus get the best experience on the internet possible. That being said you all know as well as i do, that will never happen.
For all of you out there who are on a PC (windows) GET RID OF INTERNET EXPLORER! That browser is by far the worst, It screws everything up for us when we are designing and every designer out there would love to see it go away permanantly.
Mac users using Safari, although i will say Safari isn’t that bad, we still as designers deal with quite a few issues with this browser as well.
Google Chrome users, i can’t complain just yet cause so far that browser has been everything google said it would be and they’ve done a fantastic job on it. That being said it is still in beta mode and although it may view websites nicely its still full of bugs that are being worked on.
My personal recommendation would be FireFox. This browser is by far the fastest, cleanest browser I’ve used and I think just about every designer will stand by me when I say it should be industry standard! FireFox will always display websites how they should be displayed with all the proper plug-ins and such. If your not already using it i HIGHLY suggest you check it out and dump safari and especially IE. Click the fox below.
